Cannabis infusion of oil at home is a simple procedure that enables you to use cannabis in different recipes. Chill activities perfect for cannabis lovers often include cooking or baking with infused oils, making the experience both relaxing and rewarding. Whether you’re looking for experimental use in the kitchen or therapeutic value, it’s possible with homemade cannabis oil.

Ingredients and Tools

To make a cannabis oil, you will need:

  • 3.5 to 7 grams of cannabis flower
  • 1 cup (8 ounces) of premium high-quality cooking oil (like olive oil or coconut oil).
  • A cannabis grinder
  • A nonstick baking sheet
  • A stovetop pot or a double boiler and a heat-safe bowl
  • A thermometer (optional)
  • Cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer
  • A glass jar that is air-tight for storage

Step 1: Decarboxylation

Decarboxylation is the process by which the cannabinoids in cannabis get activated and will therefore be more effective when used.

  1. Preheat your oven to 240°F (approximately 115°C).
  2. Break the cannabis into small pieces using a grinder.
  3. Pour the ground cannabis evenly in a nonstick baking sheet.
  4. Bake for ca. 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally so as to achieve an even heat.

Step 2: Infusing the Oil

By infusing the oil, the cannabinoids become bonded to the fat molecules and a powerful mixture is formed.

  1. Set up a double boiler: boil a pot to halfway with water, and a heat-safe bowl on top but not touching the water at the bottom.
  2. Heat the water to a simmer on low.
  3. Garnish the bowl with 1 cup of oil and heat it to 160°F to 180°F (70°C to 80°C).
  4. Place the decarboxylated cannabis in the oil and stir gradually.
  5. Keep the temperature and let it simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Straining and Storage

Following the infusion, it is necessary to filter the oil to remove the plant material.

  1. Cover a clean glass jar with a cheesecloth or with a fine-mesh strainer.
  2. Gently pour the infused oil through the strainer, letting it trickle into the jar.
  3. Allow the oil to cool down to room temperature.
  4. Seal it tightly and put it in a cool, dark location. The oil can last up to six months if it is stored properly.

Dosing Considerations

Dosing cannabis oil is very sensitive, as potency can change depending on the strain of cannabis used and the preparations involved.

  • Once again, taking 7 grams of cannabis priced at 25% THC, the total THC would be roughly 1,750 mg.
  • After decarboxylating and infusing, the end oil may contain approximately 1,078 mg THC.
  • As such, a teaspoon contains approximately 22 mg of THC for each: 48 teaspoons in a cup.
  • For a beginner then, it’s always good to start with a THC dose of 5 – 10mg (¼ – ½ spoonful of the oil).

But always wait at least 30 minutes to 1 hour after consumption to observe the effects before taking an extra dose.

Culinary Applications

There are a variety of dishes into which Cannabis oil can be added:

  • Finish grilled vegetables, fish, or meats with it.

→ Mix it in salad dressings or sauces.

  • Drizzle on top of desserts such as ice creams for a twist.

Ensure that you do not use high heat cooking methods because the cannabinoids can be negatively affected by excessive heat.

By doing so, you will be able to make the cannabis oil suit your needs, and use it both in the culinary style and with controlled dosing.
